Stop at Bussana Vecchia, about 10km north east of San Remo. It is a fascinating artists' colony that has been rebuilt in stone, on the site of an ancient village that was destroyed by an earthquake. Visit the Museo Civico, located in a 15th century palazzo. It offers beautiful frescoed ceilings, local prehistoric and Roman archaeological finds and famous art works.

Head to the Ristorante Urbicia Vivas set in the stunning Old Town. It is located in a quiet Medieval square and serves exquisite old Ligurian seafood recipes.
